Dr. Angela Berardinelli has been appointed Interim Undergraduate Program Director (UPD) for UNC Charlotte’s School of Data Science.

Berardinelli, who joined UNC Charlotte in 2018, has extensive experience in launching undergraduate programs in the field. Alongside Dr. Andrea Pitts and Dr. Stephanie Moller, she has been instrumental in the development of the first studio courses for the bachelor’s of science in data science degree.

She will play a vital role in the establishment and ongoing success of the data science undergraduate program at UNC Charlotte. With support from the School of Data Science staff, Berardinelli will be critical in connecting faculty, coordinating curriculum development and revision and advising students.

“It’s extremely exciting to be able to put a stamp on something that’s in such high demand from both employers and students,” Berardinelli said. “I’m looking forward to shaping the future of the field, and helping make our undergraduate degree the premiere data science program in the United States.”

Berardinelli has teaching interests in databases, data science, data structures, algorithms, discrete math and theory of computation. Her courses typically include student-centered and project-based learning whenever appropriate. Her current research interests are in word graphs for reflection groups and in using data science techniques to inform curriculum and career decisions for educators and students. She received her Ph.D. in Mathematics and has had research in pure mathematics published in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea and Transactions of the American Mathematical Society.
